It comes with free software for running the scanner with your computer. The free software doesn't allow freeze frames, but the tool supports it. If you bring your computer with you, I can help you set it up the first time.

Works on basically all cars 1996 and newer (works on all cars OBD-II compliant)
works with Windows, not sure if it will work with a Mac. By scanning for trouble codes, you can avoid having to go to a mechanic if it is something trivial. As well, you can reset it with this tool so if you want to wait for the code to come a few times, you can write it down and just reset it the first few times.
