1982 VW Westfalia - The Tiger Van
This 1982 Vanagon Westfalia was originally an underpowered diesel but was converted to a gas motor by the previous owner. I replaced that motor with a 1992 1.8L Jetta engine approximately 4800 kms ago and it has been a strong runner ever since. It gets better gas mileage and has more power than any of the stock Vanagon motor options and always passes AirCare. No leaks.
All maintenance and repairs have been done by local, reputable VW specialty shops.
Body rust free after professional restoration work and the original paint is in very good shape with a few of the scrapes and blemishes typical of its age.
GoWesty headlight upgrade with relay and high-wattage lights. Night and day improvement over stock!
Captains chairs with arm rests from newer Vanagon. MUCH more comfortable and supportive compared to stock!
15" Audi wheels with Michelin Agilis tires.
New luggage rack seal.
Custom theft deterrent.
B-Quiet soundproofing in front doors.
Modern insulation and sound proofing in camper interior.
Comes with Paulchen bike rack.
Recent work includes:
Complete front end rebuild with new sway bar, sway bar links, bushings, tie rods, upper ball joints, control arm bushings, alignment.
New rear brakes: drums, shoes and wheel cylinders.
New starter and battery.
Rebuilt Bosch alternator.
Complete tune-up with new plug wires, cap and rotor and new injectors.
The fridge works perfectly on all three settings and the stove works great too. The water pump for the sink has never worked during my ownership but I am including a new manual sink pump I bought from GoWesty but haven't installed. The canvas has some patches and is a little thin. I was planning to replace it within the next two years or so because it still works fine.
Interior is clean and in good shape for its age.
This is a very special van and a real attention-getter! It's been a real hit on road trips and at music festivals.
The Tiger Van is in the best mechanical and cosmetic shape of its life under my ownership! I'm only selling because I found myself in a syncro Westy and can't keep two vans.
Regarding the paint job; the previous owner was a high school art teacher and had his class paint the stripes on as a group project. It took some getting used to for me initially but I grew to love the stripes. The body shop I used for the panel restoration said it would be simple and cheap to remove the stripes.
I'm selling it as-is because I believe the paint job lends the van a unique personality and has made each trip a different experience than one would get in a normal van. However if you're looking for a solid, reliable camper and prefer a more discreet look, then this van will still be a good choice once you shed the stripes!
