1st Nations Soapstone Carving Resting Warrior by Al Shingkwak Ojibway Here is an interesting soapstone carving by Ojibway artist Al (Shingkwak) Laforme of the New Credit Reserve in Ontario. The carving shows a 1st Nations face in profile resting on a turtle. The carving is done in cream and medium red-brown coloured brazilstone. The number inscribed on underside is the carving registration number from the Master Register at 6 Nations Reserve society which identifies it as an authentic Iroquois carving. Condition: Excellent, any white spots in pictures are variations in the stone. Stone is a bit darker in colour than pictures may show. Measurements: 5.5” L X 3” W x 2"H Weight: About 1 lb (.5 kg) In the Iroquois Creation Story, the earth was created on the back of a turtle. It was there that life began to grow. The Turtle Clan represents the shifting of the earth and the cycles of the moon. The people of the Turtle Clan are considered a deep well of details and the keepers of the land. The Turtle Clan has a life long responsibility for everything to do with the environment.
