An Excellent Example of Authentic Quality Canadian 1st Nations Indigenous Bear Mask. For sale is a large Northwest Coast carved and painted native bear mask. The eyes, nose, and mouth are pierced (open). The mouth is open and the teeth are distinctively carved . Bears are found in mountainous areas of the mainland and bear is 1 of the most prevalent figures in crest & shamanic art and in myths. It is considered to be a close relation of humankind and as such is a link between the human and non-human realms and the natural and supernatural realms. This bear mask is beautifully carved with the mouth giving a fierce expression as bears are meant to have that look. This cedar mask is large at 11 1/2" H X 11 1/2" W & 7" Deep and is in terrific condition. The carved inscription on the inside reads "Bear Van Joseph 1996". The Joseph's are a prominent Northwest Coast family of excellent carvers from Squamish Nation. The mask displays beautifully on a shelf or wall.
