Masterful Inuit Art Soapstone 1980 Bird Soapstone Carving by Peter Papilaluk ( Puvirnituq " POV") This is a vintage 1980 grey soapstone carving of a perched Arctic bird of prey by Inuit artist Peter Papialuk. In terrific condition. Very nice 3-dimensional figure with etched feathers on the wings and neck, plus broad feet. Great beak, face and neck information. Older style Inuit art “igloo” tag (“hand made by Canadian Eskimo artist”) identifies the artist as “Peter Pappy” (Peter Papialuk).Underside faintly inscribed in Inuktitut syllabics PA-PI–A- LU (Papialuk). The registration number matches. Dated 1980. Weight: 340 grs (.75lbs) Measurement: 4 3/8” h x three ¼ “ l x 1” w (11 cm x eight cm x 2.5 cm) About the Artist Peter ("Puppy") Papialuk was the surviving son of the master artist Josie (“Puppy”) Papialuk of Puvirnituq (or" POV). Peter likely was born in the mid 1950s. Carver Isah Papialuk was Josie's brother and Peter's uncle. Like his father and uncle, Peter was often referred to as "Puppy" or "Pappy". His father Josie Papialuk lived 1918 to 1996. Josie was fundamental to Inuit art printmaking in the community of POV from the 1960s to late 1980s. Peter and Josie lived together following Josie’s wife death in 1975. Josie was noted and highly regarded for his imaginative art prints and sculptures, especially showing his passion for birds. I have several in my personal collection. There are often similarities between Josie’s and Peter’s carvings, and you can see the strong influence Josie had on Peter’s approach to Inuit sculpture. About the Community Puvirnituq is an Inuit village in far northern Quebec (Nunavik) located on the eastern coast of Hudson Bay. The community had nearly 1700 people in 2011. Hudson Bay Company established a trading post there 1st in 1921. In 1956 a Catholic mission was located in POV. Two Years later mission workers encouraged the residents to develop the Carvers Association of Puvirnituk to assist and market Inuit art. This effort in turn became the foundation of the co-operative movement in the North.
