Classic Inuit Art Carving by Joshua Sivuarpik Sheeg (1949-2011) For your consideration, here is a wonderful traditional Inuit scene by Joshua Sheeg of a hunter hauling a seal across the ice. Fine carving, measures 3 1/4" high by 3" long. Green -black stone (looks gold in photos because of the odd lighting) Inscribed "Joshua Sheeg" on underside, this was covered by bi-lingual "Igloo" label (post 1975) and the rare Puvirnituq tag. Number 62928. (Removed only for photos). Condition: Very good to excellent as shown in the images. Minor rubs, barely visible to the eye (high definition camera photos). Original owner put felt corners on the carving to prevent scratching. Comes with an details sheet on the artist, examples of his other work and info on his community. The eldest son of Isah and Mary Sivuarapik, Joshua came from a strong family of well-known carvers. He and his wife Annie Inukpuk (from nearby Inukjuak) had 9 children, two of whom were adopted. Joshua completed his primary education at the local federal school. In 1968, he attended 1 year of Fine Arts studies at the University of Alaska, where he studied silversmithing, ceramics, drawings, photography and art history. He continued his studies in art at Sheridan College in Port Credit, Ontario. His work is included in the collections of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Winnipeg Art Carousel, the Museum of the Eskimo in Churchill, Manitoba and the National Carousel of Canada, to name a few. About his Art Joshua’s subject matter was vast and included narrative scenes of the hunt and traditional Inuit life, such as this hunter hauling the seal. His specialty was birds, especially falcons. He has also assisted his wife by carving heads for her Inuit dolls. No matter what he chose to carve, his carvings always showed his great attention to detail, his diligence and technical proficiency. Among his many notable achievements, Joshua was invited to demonstrate Inuit carving for 2 mnths at Expo ’67 at the Canadian Pavilion, and at the Natural History Museum in Lyon, France in 2003. His work was also exhibited at the 1982 World's Fair. Joshua actively promoted Inuit art throughout his life. At 1 point, Joshua was the General Manager of the Povungnituk Cooperative and was the curator of the Saputik Museum in Puvirnituq. Joshua visited La Federation des Cooperatives du Nouveau-Quebec in Montreal and continued to demonstrate carving in the south.
