The West End fills a major portion of the downtown Vancouver peninsula, stretching all the way from Burrard Street on the east to Stanley Park on the west, and from Georgia Street on the north to the seawall, parks and beaches on the south. Once the railroad arrived in Vancouver in the 1860s, terminating in Coal Harbour, many of the wealthiest railroad families built mansions along Georgia Street. As the area around West Georgia became more and more a financial and business center of the city, the land values pushed residential life to the south, into what is now the West End. The Davie Mansion (1531 Davie, at Nicola), or Gabriola House as it was known due to the sandstone exterior quarried from Gabriola Island, built in 1900 for the Benjamin Tingley Roger family of Rogers Sugars, reflects the standard of these magnificent mansions and remains as the last surviving such home. As the city grew, most of these wealthiest families fled dowtown to live in the increasing vogue Shaughnessy neighborhood and the West End began filling with middle-income housing. Today, the West End is home to an incredibly diverse demographic; proud homeowners mix with the highest density of renters in the city and the LGBTQ community has deep roots in the neighborhood. The West Enders are known for their pride and activism to keep their neighborhood livable.
